Jeremiah, in the verses above, is calling to mind from his internal mental bank of stored insights an overarching assertion that shakes his tower walls of isolation and dejection. The mental act of retrieval, as well as the theological truth he retrieves, allows him to be freed from a prison of despair and reexperience the gift of hope, the necessary grace for any journey requiring endurance. Hope is, operationally, the purpose behind persistence.

Hope is like a giant bird swooping down to Jeremiah’s valley of despair, grabbing him with its giant claws and flying the prophet to a heightened perch so that he can see the promised land beyond his present circumstances. But unlike William Penn’s prison in seventeenth-century England, this perch has no walls or bars. Hope is what ultimately clarifies the “whys” of our life’s path and connects them to whatever we may be thinking or feeling, reading or viewing, posting or deleting in any given moment. It is why reestablishing hope is essential for anyone tempted to give up on a difficult but necessary journey. Again, hope is the purpose behind persistence.
